Gary Chan – Principal
Over the past 5 years Gary Chan has been contributing to the development of SQA² while expanding his own technical and professional skills. He is a Principal within our organization that is well on his way to becoming one of the first owners of SQA² through our ownership program. We took some time this month to interview him and see what he has to say about what he has been able to accomplish so far, what we can expect moving forward and some words of encouragement and advice for new team members.
An Interview with Gary
SQA²: How has SQA² helped you in your career development?
Gary Chan: I have improved both my professional and personal skills. I have greatly expanded my programming knowledge as well as expanded upon my understanding of how Business Intelligence structures work. Due to constructive feedback, I have steadily improved my interpersonal skills. Better interpersonal skills have not only helped me professionally, but also have immensely helped me in my personal life too.
SQA²: What advice do you have for new team members at SQA²?
GC: 1) Perception is everything – master the perception people have of you, especially at business partners, and you will have a successful career, 2) Be open to change – if you can adapt to rapidly changing situations, you will be successful in this company, 3) Put in your time – like with most things in life, things aren’t just handed to you; with this company, if you put in your time, gain experience and kick a**, success will come!
SQA²: What are 3 words to describe SQA²?
GC: Mentorship, Learning, Growth.
SQA²: Three words to best describe you?
GC: Relentless, Undaunted, Self-improvement!
SQA²: What do you find the most challenging about QA?
GC: Coming up with more efficient ways in which to code test automation.
SQA²: What do you like most about QA?
GC: Finding those high severity bugs that are the bane of any developer’s existence. If we do not find it, the end-users will.
SQA²: What drew you to SQA² originally? And how has SQA² changed since?
GC: Seeing with my own eyes that it was a small company (less than 10 employees). I had worked at large companies the previous 8 years and was keen to work at a small company with lots of room for growth. SQA² has grown by 700-800% since.
SQA²: What has been your favorite project at SQA²?
GC: When I was onsite at Core Digital and developed the automation framework that SQA² still uses today.
SQA²: What have you gained from working at SQA²?
GC: Invaluable technical and interpersonal skills.
SQA²: What is on your wish list for the next 10 years with SQA²?
GC: Seeing the company grow to 500 employees!!!
SQA²: What is your favorite part about working for SQA²?
GC: Going to a new business partner where I meet new people, learn new technologies and get the opportunity to adapt to a new environment.
SQA²: Do you believe we are the best at what we do?
GC: Yes! No other company can compete with our skill level and business model.
SQA²: Can you tell us a little about the people you work with?
GC: I work with George Nunez, who is my mentor at SQA² and also the President and CEO. He has helped me grow tremendously since I joined the company. Without his mentorship, my career probably wouldn’t be where it is today.
SQA²: What is your proudest moment at SQA²?
GC: When I went onsite with a business partner we had no previous relationship with and 3 months later, after laying the foundation, transitioned off the project and handed it off to a junior team member that was rising up. It was extremely exciting to be able to build up the next person in our organization and put them in a position to be successful, and provide them with an opportunity to be promoted. It also made it possible for me to move onto another project and continue to expand my own skill set and again meet new people and be in a new environment.
SQA²: What are your thoughts on being a Principal?
GC: Actively being part of helping the company grow has been a rewarding challenge for me. I have learned a lot of different aspects in business marketing and business growth strategies. Exposing me to a different .
SQA²: What is your favorite tech blog, website?
GC: I grew up a computer nerd, and being heavily into things like building my own computer, I have been reading Anandtech for the past 15 years or so.
SQA²: If you were to write a book about yourself, what would you name it?
GC: PDCA – A Story About My Improvement.
SQA²: Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us?
GC: Played in the 2015 World Series of Poker Main Event. Unfortunately, only got to Day 2 of the event.
SQA²: What are three career lessons you’ve learned thus far?
GC: 1) Patience is rewarded, 2) Try to learn from others mistakes, 3) Make a name for yourself early on.
SQA²: What is your personal mantra?
GC: Rely on yourself.
SQA²: What are you most proud of?
GC: Attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, right before the age cutoff!
