Gary Chan – Principal

Over the past 5 years Gary Chan has been contributing to the development of SQA² while expanding his own technical and professional skills. He is a Principal within our organization that is well on his way to becoming one of the first owners of SQA² through our ownership program. We took some time this month to interview him and see what he has to say about what he has been able to accomplish so far, what we can expect moving forward and some words of encouragement and advice for new team members.

An Interview with Gary

SQA²: How has SQA² helped you in your career development?
Gary Chan: I have improved both my professional and personal skills. SQA²: What advice do you have for new team members at SQA²?
GC: 1) Perception is everything – master the perception people have of you, especially at business partners, and you will have a successful career, 2) Be open to change – if you can adapt to rapidly changing situations, you will be successful in this company, 3) Put in your time – like with most things in life, things aren’t just handed to you; with this company, if you put in your time, gain experience and kick a**, success will come!

GC: Finding those high severity bugs that are the bane of any developer’s existence. If we do not find it, the end-users will.
SQA²: What drew you to SQA² originally? And how has SQA² changed since?
GC: Seeing with my own eyes that it was a small company (less than 10 employees). I had worked at large companies the previous 8 years and was keen to work at a small company with lots of room for growth. SQA² has grown by 700-800% since.

GC: I work with George Nunez, who is my mentor at SQA² and also the President and CEO. He has helped me grow tremendously since I joined the company. Without his mentorship, my career probably wouldn’t be where it is today.
SQA²: What is your proudest moment at SQA²?
GC: When I went onsite with a business partner we had no previous relationship with and 3 months later, after laying the foundation, transitioned off the project and handed it off to a junior team member that was rising up. It was extremely exciting to be able to build up the next person in our organization and put them in a position to be successful, and provide them with an opportunity to be promoted. It also made it possible for me to move onto another project and continue to expand my own skill set and again meet new people and be in a new environment.
