The problem is that these AI platforms pull from public repositories such as Github. It’s unknown how well the training data is being assessed before being used to train the AI model, but likely not at all,” states Harrison.
“There’s a risk there. As this process progresses, developers use AI coding platforms to create projects with questionable code sourced from public repositories and use it in new projects. These new projects then get checked back into new public repositories. This reinforces the bad code in the dataset from which AI coding platforms learn.
“This pattern repeats, and we end up spreading bad code far and wide. It’s incredibly important for QA to be involved as these tools emerge and are implemented before being fully refined. Bugs will be present, and the quality of the code can be suspect. Testing is paramount to ensure these bad practices don’t impact the customer and the revenue stream of the business,” says Harrison.
